Abstract: Objective:This study was designed to explore the relationship between the triglyceride glucose index (TyG index) and cognitive function changes in elderly individuals over a two-year follow-up period, providing evidence for early identification of high-risk populations for cognitive decline. Methods: The study enrolled 101 elderly patients aged ≥60 years who were hospitalized at Quanzhou First Hospital between September 2022 and December 2022. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) scale at baseline and after a 2-year follow-up period. Participants were divided into two groups based on median TyG index values at baseline. The association between TyG index and cognitive decline was analyzed using binary logistic regression models with adjustment for potential confounding factors.Results: ① Spearman correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between the TyG index and changes in cognitive function (r = -0.243, P < 0.05); ② The high-TyG group showed a significantly higher incidence of cognitive decline (43.1%) compared to the low-TyG group (24.0%, P<0.05); ③ After adjusting for confounding factors, the risk of cognitive decline in the high TyG index group was 2.971 times higher than that in the low TyG index group (P < 0.05).Conclusions: This study indicate that the TyG index was associated with cognitive function changes over two years in elderly hospitalized patients. The TyG index may serve as a potential early-warning biomarker for cognitive decline.
