Correlation between t-P1NP/β-CTX and curative effect of Bushen Zhuanggu Decoction in patients with knee osteoarthritis

  Abstract: Objective To explore the correlation between total procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide (t-P1NP)/βcross-linked C-telopeptide of type 1 collagen (β-CTX) and curative effect of Bushen Zhuanggu Decoction in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods A total of 120 patients with KOA of liver-kidney deficiency type in Orthopedics Department of Linping District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Hangzhou, were enrolled between June 2021 and April 2024. According to random number table method, they were divided into control group (oral etocoxib tablets and omeprazole enteric-coated capsules) and study group (Bushen Zhuanggu Decoction on basis of control group). All patients were treated for 1 month. The clinical curative effect, scores of TCM syndromes, levels of serum t-P1NP and β-CTX, t-P1NP/β-CTX and scores of the western ontario and mcmaster universities (WOMAC) before and after treatment, and the incidence of adverse reactions during treatment were compared between the two groups. Results The total response rate of study group was significantly higher than that of control group (91.67% vs 78.33%, P<0.05). After treatment, scores of TCM syndromes (dull joint pain, waist-leg weakness, soreness and weakness of waist and knees) in study group were significantly lower than those in control group (P<0.05). The levels of t-P1NP and β-CTX in study group were lower than those in control group, while t-P1NP/β-CTX was greater than that in control group (P<0.05). The scores of WOMAC (osteoarthritis pain, stiffness, defects of physical function) in study group were lower than those in control group (P<0.05). The difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusion Bushen Zhuanggu Decoction can improve clinical curative effect, relieve TCM syndromes and pain response, increase t-P1NP/β-CTX and reduce incidence of adverse reactions in patients with KOA of liver-kidney deficiency type.
