Abstract: 【Abstract】Objective: This study seeks to examine the variances in patient trust patterns between tertiary hospitals and primary healthcare institutions in China. It employs a mixed methods approach integrating survey experiments and aims to offer tailored policy suggestions to enhance patient trust. Methods: Qualitative data were collected through convenience sampling via semi-structured interviews with 38 residents. Quantitative data were obtained through multi-stage and incidental sampling via a questionnaire survey among residents of Liaocheng, Zibo, and Yantai cities in Shandong Province, resulting in 648 valid responses. Results: Discrepancies were identified in patient trust patterns between tertiary hospitals and primary healthcare institutions through qualitative data analysis utilizing word frequency analysis. These variances were subsequently validated through survey experiments. The results reveal that respondents exhibit higher System Trust in tertiary hospitals than in primary healthcare institutions, while their Interpersonal Trust level is higher in primary healthcare institutions than in tertiary hospitals, and these disparities are statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Significant disparities in patient trust patterns exist between tertiary hospitals and primary healthcare institutions in China. Enhancing the medical standards of primary healthcare institutions and optimizing the patient care processes at tertiary hospitals are essential measures to improve patient trust.
