Abstract: Objective : To explore the relationship between family dysfunction in childhood and depression tendency of the elderly and its relative contribution, cumulative effect and mechanism. Methods :Based on the data of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey in 2014 and 2018, Shapley value decomposition method is used to analyze the important influencing factors of depression of the elderly in the early stage of life. Mediation and moderating effect analysis are used to study the relationship between adult socioeconomic status, childhood family dysfunction and depression of the elderly. Results: long-term bedridden, physical disability, mental disorder, being beaten by mother, being beaten by father, often quarreled by parents, and being beaten by father in childhood had positive effects on the depression of the elderly. The relative contribution of long-term lying sickness of child-bearing female caregivers to the depression tendency of the elderly is the largest (29.44%), followed by the beating of mother by father (23.39%), and the mental disorder of child-bearing female caregivers (10.94% ). There is a cumulative effect of childhood family dysfunction on the depression of the elderly. The more types of childhood family dysfunction are, the more serious the depression tendency of the elderly is. The number of types of family dysfunction in childhood can affect the degree of depression of the elderly through socioeconomic status. With the increase of years of education, the influence of the types’ number of childhood family dysfunction on elderly depression will be weakened. Conclusion:The key to improving the mental health level of the elderly is to ensure the normal functioning of the family in childhood and provide effective assistance to children with family dysfunction.
