Abstract: Objective: To explore the impact and difference of adolescents’ BMI and weight perception on their mental health, so as to provide a basis for developing relevant prevention strategies and treatment measures. Methods: Based on the data of CEPS 2014-2015, the OLS regression model and the propensity score matching (PSM) method are used to to analyze adolescents’ mental health levels. Results: The OLS regression results show that overweight perception has a significant negative impact on adolescents mental health (β = -0.094, P < 0.001), whereas BMI has no significant impact on it (P > 0.05).Except gender, average daily sleeping hours, self-rated health, incidence of illness in the last year, relationship with parents, family economic status, school activity participation and affinity for school are factors influencing adolescents mental health levels (p < 0.05). The PSM analysis results also show that overweight perception could decrease adolescents mental health (ATT = -1.463), while the BMI does not have statistical significance for it (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Adolescents overweight perception significantly affects their mental health; thus, it is recommended to cultivate youngsters to establish correct values of aesthetics and body image perception and actively educate them to develop healthy body management consciousness, in order to promote the Healthy China strategy.
