The Utilization of Laryngeal Mask Airway in Prone Position Surgery

Abstract: The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) has been extensively employed in various surgical procedures as a substitute for the endotracheal tube (ETT) to facilitate ventilation and oxygenation, with the aim of optimizing patient comfort and minimizing trauma. In comparison to ETT, LMA offers reduced patient stimulation and likelihood of pain and complications. However, there is an ongoing debate regarding the safe and effective utilization of LMA in prone surgery. With advancements in technology and evolving concepts, the applicability of LMA in prone surgery is expanding, necessitating comprehensive re-evaluation. This article will comprehensively examine this issue from multiple perspectives including benefits, feasibility, safety considerations, risks, and precautions.
