Abstract: Objective To provide a reference and suggestions for the implementation of Chinas health assistance, this study analyzed the characteristics of Japans Development Assistance for Health (DAH) Methods This study used the DAH database of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) of the University of Washington to analyze Japan’s channels of DAH, target regions and key countries, and health focus area, and conducted a cross-analysis of the above dimensions. Results Japans generally preferred multilateral and non-governmental channels, and the proportion of these channel stabilized at more than 60% in recent years. The recipient countries were classified into bilateral, multilateral, and hybrid types based on main aid channels. The target regions of Japans DAH were sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Funds from 2010 to 2017 mainly flowed to Pakistan, Vietnam, India. The health focus area where Japans DAH invested the most was the strengthening of the health system, and the investment in this area was mainly through bilateral channels. The health focus areas targeted by Japan’s DAH in different regions were also different. Conclusions Japans DAH served the national strategy obviously, and the choice of aid channels in different regions and health focus areas was reasonable, which was worth learning for China.
