A study on the impact of Internet use on loneliness in the elderly: The moderating role of age

• 摘要：背景：我国正处于互联网快速发展和老龄化不断加深的重要交汇期，推动老年人共享互联网红利、促进健康改善具有重要的现实意义。目的：了解老年人互联网使用现状及孤独感水平，探究不同年龄老年人，互联网使用对其孤独感的影响及特点。方法：利用2018年“中国老年社会追踪调查”数据，采用多元回归分析探究互联网使用对老年人孤独感的影响及年龄的调节作用，并利用倾向值得分匹配法控制模型估计偏差。结果：互联网使用对老年人孤独感的影响会受到年龄的影响（，），对于70岁以下老年人，互联网使用可显著降低老年人孤独感，而对于70岁及以上老年人，互联网使用对孤独感无影响。结论：随着年龄的增长，互联网使用降低老年人孤独感的作用会逐渐减弱。在老年人群中，互联网作用的发挥与互联网时代发展密切相关，越早进行互联网介入干预，越能帮助老年人养成使用互联网的习惯，从而充分发挥其降低老年人孤独感、改善身心健康的积极作用。

  Abstract: Background: China is in an important intersection period of rapid Internet developing and deepening aging. It is of great significance to promote the elderly to gain Internet dividends and promote health improvement. Objective: To understand the current situation of Internet use and loneliness level of the elderly, and to explore the influence and characteristics of Internet use on loneliness in the elderly of different ages. Methods: Using the data from China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey in 2018, multiple regression analysis was used to explore the impact of Internet use on the loneliness in the elderly and the moderating role of age, and the propensity score matching method was used to control the estimation deviation of the model. Results: The effect of Internet use on the loneliness of the elderly was affected by age (，), for the elderly under 70 years old, Internet use could significantly reduce the loneliness of the elderly, but for the elderly aged 70 years and over, Internet use had no effect on the loneliness. Conclusion: With the increase of age, the role of Internet use in reducing loneliness in the elderly will gradually weaken. Among the elderly, the role of the Internet is closely related to the development of the Internet era. The earlier the Internet intervention goes on, the more it can help the elderly form the habit of using the Internet, so as to give full play to its positive role in reducing the loneliness of the elderly and improving their physical and mental health.
